Soluble and insoluble substances

Pure substances are made of only one substance eg: water, copper

Mixtures are made of more than one substance eg wood, plastic,

Soluble means the substance dissolves (clear)

insoluble means the substance doesn’t dissolve (cloudy, particles are seen)

Aim:to mix 6 substances in water to find out whether they are soluble or insoluble

Materials:

Equipment Needed: 6 test tubes, test tube rack, 2 rubber stoppers

Chemicals: Copper sulphate, Sodium chloride, Copper carbonate, Sugar, salt, sand

Method:

1. Collect equipment

2. Half fill 6 test tubes with tap water.

3. Go to the chemical container and put a small spoonful in the test tube

4. Stopper and shake

5. Put back in test tube rack

6. Go to the next station

Results.

Mixture Initial observation Observations after 5 mins Type of mixture (solution or suspension)
Copper sulfate & water Particles disappeared; solution turned blue  Still clear blue Soluble/solution
Sodium chloride & water

Clear, particles disappeared

clear Soluble/solution
Copper carbonate & water  Green and cloudy

All the green particles fallen to bottom Insoluble/suspension
Sugar & water   Particles disappeared; clear

Still clear Soluble/solution
Chalk & water  Murky, white, particles visible

White particles settle to the bottom Insoluble/suspension
Sand & water  Murky, particles visable  Sand settles to bottom Insoluble/suspension
